Let's just say it: 2024 was a WAY better movie year than I expected. What a delightful surprise this movie is. This is easily the best June Squibb performance I've seen yet, and a well deserved leading role too.

I missed comedies like this that are funny, but also poignant and thought-provoking. (The 00s were chock-full of them.) It's light, only 90+ minutes, yet is still a wise meditation on youth, aging, family, and our ability to grow and change.…

    ★★★

Mickey 17 is kind of like the title character: a copy of other Bong Joon Ho movies. It’s the same anti-capitalist themes, same goofy-gory aesthetic, same emphasis on the absurd. The politics are good, duh. But this time, the movie is too long, too obvious, and a little too overstuffed thematically to appreciate. That said, Pattinson is delightfully weird, as usual. Ruffalo’s proto-Trump is fine; Toni Collette, again, is not given enough to do in her lines. No regrets - Ho sure likes to create pig-like creatures in every sense - but maybe my least favorite effort of Ho’s.

I really enjoyed this! Movies like this are a balm: they make you feel like you’re not alone and part of community, even when portraying sad or somber moments. Yakusho’s performance is extraordinary, and I wish more people knew about it. He demonstrates pretty much every human emotion during these 2 hours.

The cinematography captures Tokyo beautifully, and so much of the film is dedicated to the small joys in life. Good writing. Good music. Being in nature. I’ll be thinking about this movie for a while.

I loved this ambitious, grotesque, 3+ hour-long satire, takedown, and homage (all in one package here) to Hollywood and the legacy of film. Much like Showgirls to Las Vegas and Scarface to Miami, Babylon demonstrates LA's own take on the "American dream" and how, like moths to a flame, it leads to the demise of many due to greed, patriarchy, and rampant hedonism.

I can see why this movie is divisive: it's long, very explicit, and pulls no punches. Robbie…
