This fell flat for me. It’s a slacker movie by way of hard sci-fi, which also has a lot of commentary around the war on drugs…yet often these components just make for an incoherent jumble. The jumble is then aggravated by the cell shading/animated effect. At least Robert Downey Jr. is great in this.

Almost too short for its own good, but a fun caper of intrigue, drama, and relationships. Not that deep, but it also doesn’t need to be. Pierce Brosnan is fun as an elder boss type. Soderbergh makes B-movies look suave.

I really enjoyed this! Movies like this are a balm: they make you feel like you’re not alone and part of community, even when portraying sad or somber moments. Yakusho’s performance is extraordinary, and I wish more people knew about it. He demonstrates pretty much every human emotion during these 2 hours.

The cinematography captures Tokyo beautifully, and so much of the film is dedicated to the small joys in life. Good writing. Good music. Being in nature. I’ll be thinking about this movie for a while.

Much like Showgirls to Las Vegas and Scarface to Miami, Babylon demonstrates LA's own take on the "American dream" and how, like moths to a flame, it leads to the demise of many due to greed, patriarchy, and rampant hedonism.

I can see why this movie is divisive: it's long, very explicit, and pulls no punches. Robbie…
