It’s a 90 minute Illumination movie for young children still developing their sense of media literacy with enough Mario Words sprinkled in to make 30 year olds happy, and I don’t really know how people giving it negative reviews expected anything else.
Here’s a test if you’re mad about a kid’s movie, just calm down and ask yourself “okay but how would I feel about this if I was seven years old and at a sleepover with a slice of pepperoni pizza and paper cup full of orange soda”
I think the super horny bird people in this movie made me really uncomfortable as a small child, but now that I’m an adult who understands the cultural relevance of Elvis Presley I can see that he represents a very particular style of distinctly masculine glam and opulence that can really only be represented by a horny singing cartoon rooster.
This is probably the most unpleasant experience I’ve ever had in a movie theatre and I spent almost the entire run time resisting the urge to get up and leave. But I think that’s what they were going for, so, you know, resounding success!
