Astoundingly beautiful sketch and watercolor animation make for a constant treat for the eyes viewing the mythos of Princess Kaguya. It’s a tale of the gorgeousness of life and nature just as much it is about how greed and misogyny bring nothing but ruin. Its story is so full of love and joy and yet leaves the heart completely wrenched. Even with some of the most adorably drawn animals and creatures, as a viewer I was still left a little hollow at conclusion. Charming, thought provoking, and yet a little desolate in particular with regard to the good of humanity. Also, Princess Bubblegum spotted (heard).

The Messengers 2007
Highly derivative with infantile scares and a languishing lack of style, though desperately attempted directorially. Young Kristen Stewart holds the shambling pieces of this bare bones basic horror movie together. The parental characters are stupid, and the twist is highly lacking. It wants to be scary soooo badly, but it really isn’t anything at all 😔

Moonlight 2016
Very beautiful and immersive, but exceptionally quiet. A true exercise in showing and not telling, it gives a peek into perspectives seldomly considered in film. Florida serves as an understated setting too, representing a similarly tropical counter to do much LGBT representation done across the country in LA and San Fran. And though I still don’t understand why it’s called Moonlight, the whole film is aglow. Night scenes in particular manage to fluidly create some of the most iridescent yet…
