  i could not, on my life, explain to you why this won best picture.

  i think this is a really good distillation of why wong kar-wai is such a hit or miss director for me. it starts out with some beautiful cinematography, a convincingly quirky idea, and devolves into a formulaic sequence of trite ideas and paint-by-numbers situations for our intrepid, faceless heroine. i wish the screenwriter had been better, because there is the whisper of a more interesting story here. the visuals are beautiful, i'll grant that, and that's usually what salvages kar-wai…

  best rom-com ever made, mind you. but the best part every time i crack up laughing over "oh, but baby fish mouth is sweeping the nation" and no one understands why that's the part i find so funny. i just do.
