Much like Leger's more straightforwardly cubist paintings, this functions as both a celebration of the most basic geometric forms as well as a commentary on what we - and the Western canon more generally - find beautiful about the images we depict. In this instance, the images in question are neither beautiful enough nor compelling enough to carry the film. Fun experiment nevertheless.

Twenty-Four Dollar Island 1927
A great score by Donald Sosin on the Kino Lorber edition cannot make this film any less inert. Aside from boats, there is very little dynamism; aside from a couple shots from very high skyscrapers, there is very little grandeur. Look instead to other city symphonies of the 1920s.

Second-Hand Hearts 1980
More shouted dialogue than WWE Raw - and at least that is theatrical and fun. This movie is a uniquely unpleasant experience.

Porco Rosso 1992
Set in an Adriatic coast that existed in the same way that the Central Europe of the Grand Budapest Hotel existed: as a dream-like and fantastical pastiche. Also, the main character is a pig man.
