This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Past a certain point, self-awareness is the death of joy, at least when we're talking about the Gerwig-Baumbach school of self-awareness. It simultaneously feels like Gerwig and co. have made an excellent ad for Barbie and like they don't really like Barbie much. The film ends up feeling disingenuous to me both in its celebration of the Barbie brand and in its critiques, arriving in a cold cul de sac.

Poor Things 2023
There's a delicate balancing act in The Favourite, the previous Lanthimos-McNamara-Stone collaboration. Tony McNamara's vulgar comic instincts and quirky anachronistic period piece dialogue is kept just in check by the solidity of the fundamental story (I wonder how much of that film's success for me has to do with the original writer Deborah Davis), not to mention characters who all make perfect sense and are performed brilliantly.
