    We Live in Time

    ★½

Endless time jumps that left our protagonists just out of reach. Threadbare characters we knew little about beyond their occupations. Out-of-place comedy that was meant to make the movie feel all the more “real”. I left this one feeling no closer to the characters and their musings on their limited time together, nor compelled to reflect on my own finite time. Or rather, all I felt was that I’d wasted a bit of mine.

Wonderfully calibrated blend of humour and anguish.

Like any good fable, there was so much more to this story than its plot points. I found myself musing on the undercurrents of adoptive parenting, and the notion of ‘programming’ in a robot versus our biology ‘programming’ of Mothering that gets passed down generationally.

    The Substance

    ★★★★½

The Substance is a fearlessly non-subtle piece of art.

While the films repetitiveness could lead some to irritation… it’s very repetitiveness adds to the pungency of the work. The Substance knows it isn’t “exposing” unrealistic beauty standards to us and instead finds its power in playing one note - relentlessly, aggressively and impatiently to the point of insanity.

For a work that felt like an assault on the senses, that left my jaw hanging in row H at Event Cinema Chermside and my stomach in the aisle next to it … I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
