    Director's Retrospective No.1 | Stanley Kubrick (Part 9 of 13)

I didn't feel that visceral, jaw dropping, mind-is-blown feeling that I still remember feeling when I watched A Clockwork Orange for the first time over a decade ago. I was 14.

What I came away with was a very whole sense of appreciation for what this film tries to do, in practically every way.

"If you ever found a nice Jew, you would be the best explorer in the world."

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas compartmentalises the entire Nazi racial philosophy into one collective idea that they thought the Jews weren't "nice". Then, as if its oversimplification of such a scar on modern times wasn't enough, the film genuinely sympathises with them.

While it is admittedly little more than just a balls-out action movie, the reasons why this film impresses yet so many others (3 Days to Kill, November Man, The Equalizer) fail are clear. John Wick never takes itself too seriously, the action scenes are carefully and brilliantly choreographed, the music is appropriate and kind of amazing & the humour is smart and in the right places, instead of relying on lazy, stupid puns placed wherever. This film is not really anything special, especially compared to the transcendent The Guest, but its stylish, dynamic and satisfying enough to be one the best action movies recently.
