Miracle Mile 1988
cute but cheesy 80s rom-com that melts slowly into an anxious, toe-curling hellscape. terrifying and heart-swelling

The Mummy 1959

mummies are maybe my least favorite of the “classic” monster archetypes. My belief is that the concept is implicitly racist. requiring more than “stop casting white people to play pharaohs”, the concept of the mummy as an object of horror is borderline unsalvageable from its racial-caricature roots; this rendition has brownface, orientalism, colonial and imperial apologism, it villainizes Egyptians for saying white people shouldn’t be taking their shit and keeping it in British museums, it casts early North African religion…

The Curse of Frankenstein 1957
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein meets H.P. Lovecraft’s Herbert West—Reanimator. Not a sympathetic but egotistical scientist, this Victor is a fucking psycho maniac who, after his friend suggests using their new discovery to aid in cardiac surgery, immediately starts talking about chopping up bodies to create an undead man-collage. not my favorite of the Hammer films, not my favorite Frankenstein film, but worth its salt in dismembered body parts, unsettling latex makeup, and the reddest blood you’ve ever seen.
