No one’s doin’ nothin’ to nobody. It’s all just happening, see?

Saw this one on my way to a different film and figured why not. Some big names in here. Gary Oldman continues to solidify his case as one of the greatest there ever was. Sean Penn is also undeniably left out of the “greats” conversation. Every early film of his I see is a showcase of his talent. Really solid film; very well put together closing sequence. Worth a pit stop on my quest, that’s for sure.

Having seen bits and pieces of this film over the years, I was intrigued to finally have a chance to see it all the way through. This one was good. Viola Davis is an absolute unit here - easily the strongest performance in an already powerful cast.

I know the social norms on display here were par for the course back in the 50s and 60s, but it’s still crazy to think that that was all once deemed okay. The irony…

Incredibly surprised with how good this turned out to be. I went into it expecting childish brain rot; came out of it pleasantly thrilled. Super cool and unique animation, heartfelt and genuinely funny. The overtly named places and “things” were especially humorous - “giant expendable empty warehouse” and the like. Pete Davidson really shines when you can’t see his face. Now I feel compelled - maybe even inspired - to be a better dad thanks to this rated G version Island of Dr. Moreau.

This was surprisingly good for a Netflix original. Managed to take some well treaded and otherwise generic plot elements and elevate them to a better level. The action sequences were succinct and intense, and the non lethal approach to it all was a nice little bonus. I’d never heard of or seen any work by Aaron Pierre before this, but I hope this is a jumping off point for more of his work.
