The year is 1968 and New York University (NYU) has just fired its film professor, Harry Hurwitz. He had convinced his students to film a soft core pornography film and then proceeded to screen it at the university. Word got to the Dean and it was curtains for Hurwitz. In need of a replacement, the school quickly realized there was a lack of film professors waiting to be hired, it was not a popular job at that time. The…

The first movie I ever saw in theaters, and every time I revisit it, I’m instantly transported back to that opening weekend. Each scene is stitched into my memory, playing out like a collection of moments from my past, with even the sound design triggering waves of nostalgia. Peter’s awkward screams as he’s tossed around, the spit from the straw in the first spider-sense sequence, the cringeworthy attempts at communication with Mary Jane—every detail feels as familiar as those stories shared with family during the holidays.

    All things must end.

Will we still be doing this in 10 years? Hell, even in 3 or 5 years, will we still be chasing a larger future through fragmented, incomplete stories?

Ran is considered one of ‘late’ Kurosawa’s better films. In fact, it’s considered one of his better films in general. Continuing the saga of struggling to get films made late in his career, Kurosawa found himself once again unable to find funds for his next project. It wasn’t until Producer Serge Silberman came in to the picture that Kurosawa was able to green light his project and turn Ran in to a Japanese and French co-production. Kurosawa now found…

On this viewing, I finally pieced together that Neiman earned the role of core drummer in the opening scene. Fletcher sees the potential and knows that Neiman is the guy—but Fletcher, being a psychopath, decides to push him even further. The next hour and twenty minutes is Fletcher testing Neiman, manipulating him, breaking him down. He comes to his class, knowing Neiman will notice. He upgrades him to his class, lies to him, makes him arrive hours early, then…
