Hairspray 2007
I haven’t seen the original Hairspray by John Waters. But going by the Letterboxd descriptions, the 2007 musical adaptation seems faithful enough. The musical manages to capture Waters’ counter-cultural essence in a much more accessible style for younger audiences, which, is not inherently a bad thing considering the important topical matters Hairspray dives into with integration and inclusivity. Honestly this was a really fun musical. John Travolta’s not quite Divine, but deserves four stars alone just for the commitment.

I can’t believe this film ends with a fucking piano cover of Wonderwall.
Tries so desperately hard to be Spielberg, but so utterly lacking in the same magic sauce.
