  I once heard a film critic say that any filmmaker’s first feature film should be banned from being over 90 minutes long. Although I wouldn’t go quite that far, I do think this would be a much stronger film had the story been stripped down and shortened by 20/30 minutes. I didn’t mind the slow pace, it’s just that at certain points I felt like I was watching the same scene for the second or third time.

  Interesting structure and fascinating subject. This avoids pretty much every problem I usually have with biopics, which I often find boring and formulaic. A really thought provoking, intense film - especially for people interested in writing and creating art - I’ll definitely be thinking about this one for a while.

  If I had one criticism it would be that I didn’t really get a clear idea about why Mishima became so nationalistic - he becomes obsessed with bringing back the emperor and changing Japan but I didn’t get a great idea as to why.
