Women are questionably written and there are some formally crummy moments but this is exactly the kind of charming, scrappy, and dramaturgically competent indie comedy movie that I expected. It's really fun to see how much Kevin Smith tries hard to work around various limitations. There is also a real attention to how the character is written and performed, conflict between the characters, and making the conflict expressive that makes the movie a pretty engaging experience. I also find 16mm…

Some of the moments and the lead performances are pretty funny and the premise is neat. I also appreciate that McKay seems to have heart in his right place and you get the sense that he's passionate about getting across his critique. However, this is a boring crummy mush on a visual level. Shot composition and lighting are dull to look at and the editing is simply sloppy eyesore. In other words, this is 'Hot Fuzz but looks boring as hell' because McKay simply doesn't have enrapturing visual ingenuity directors like Edgar Wright possesses.

An action movie where the action scenes are comprised of shots that are probably clumsily zoomed in in post to keep the violence out of the frame is unsurprisingly terrible. I can't imagine how anyone thought that was a remotely acceptable idea. I don't see how you can do that in an action movie and not make the whole thing an unwatchable eyesore. Even though I haven't seen the director's cut, I can tell you that not only is this a clearly inferior cut, this is a worthless cut. There's no reason to bother with this cut.

This movie somehow manages to be flippant and desperate at the same time. It also relentlessly insists that this is the wittiest movie you've ever seen and you will ever see, which renders itself completely unwatchable. It also commits…
