Wild at Heart 1990
This was the first David Lynch feature I ever saw. I tracked it down on VHS sometime after the fateful Season 2 finale of "Twin Peaks" -- needing, craving more of that weird wonderful world he had brought to life.
For those reasons, and a lot more, "Wild at Heart" will always be a sentimental favorite. I find this to be among the most optimistic of Lynch's work ("Twin Peaks" being the most?). It's the most classic "comedy" in the…

Flow 2024
Each day creation is renewed.
So much mystery in this world and yet it’s immediately familiar. Are these animals humanistic (granted they do steer the boat) or are all god’s creatures driven by the same wants and needs and fears and hopes?
As they sing in “Fidelio” - Love and courage are the only path to Freedom! These animals find the Flow by following a similar path.
Beautiful movie. More heart, artistry and humanity in this one, than the last 10 (?) Pixar/Disney schlockfests combined.

Il Sorpasso 1962
Thinking of “Wild Strawberries” while watching this film - but of course with less obvious pathos and more Italian “ciao bella” attitude and humor.
So much love and humanity in this film. For people. For family. For friends. For the open road. And of course for Italy.
This looks great, has an amazing soundtrack and made me snort with laughter.
A classic that deserves to be mentioned alongside other masterpieces from this era from Fellini, Visconti, and Rossellini.

The Metropolitan Opera: Fidelio 2025
Was actually at the Metropolitan Opera House this afternoon, so saw this live (and from the cheap seats!)
Eternally moved by Beethoven's exhortation against tyranny. I am a relative opera neophyte - but this production was incredibly engaging - with Lise Davidsen's Leonore/Fidelio the clear highlight.
Love and courage remain the only path to freedom.

The Penguin 2024
“The Batman Epic Crime Saga” goes well beyond homage and inspiration. It’s not in conversation with prior works - it’s pure plagiarism.
Let’s be real. “The Penguin” is nothing more than a mechanical rip-off of the Sopranos. The performances, the story beats, the sets (particularly the mother’s house) are literally a slavish recreation of David Chase’s work with a slight Batman patina.
What is the point of this entire project?
Why make a Batman movie where the Riddler is nothing…
