    Wild at Heart

    ★★★★½

This was the first David Lynch feature I ever saw. I tracked it down on VHS sometime after the fateful Season 2 finale of "Twin Peaks" -- needing, craving more of that weird wonderful world he had brought to life.

For those reasons, and a lot more, "Wild at Heart" will always be a sentimental favorite. I find this to be among the most optimistic of Lynch's work ("Twin Peaks" being the most?). It's the most classic "comedy" in the…

    The Last of the Mohicans

By the time Nathaniel was two-fisting muskets and blowing away fools, I was already deep in.

For some reason I remember this movie being promoted as a romance-novel, which it kinda sorta is, just with Michael Mann’s stylized ultra violence.

An all time great score (like maybe top 10) and incredible performances make this such an enjoyable watch.

1990’s action movies - we had it so good.

    Golem

    ★★★★

One of the most unsettling science fiction films I’ve seen. A true dystopian vision, informed by living in the actual dystopia of late 70’s Warsaw.

The story of the “The Golem” is newly relevant because of AI and the mystical, almost magical (“it just works but we can’t really explain it”) way in which it has entered our world.

But whether summoned through NVIDIA chips or ancient Kabbalah incantations, being cruel to your creations inevitably leads to the same dark path.

The abomination is not the Golem, but
our cruelty towards it and use for nefarious purposes.

    The Metropolitan Opera: Fidelio

Was actually at the Metropolitan Opera House this afternoon, so saw this live (and from the cheap seats!)

Eternally moved by Beethoven's exhortation against tyranny. I am a relative opera neophyte - but this production was incredibly engaging - with Lise Davidsen's Leonore/Fidelio the clear highlight.

Love and courage remain the only path to freedom.

    Fidelio Lives!

“The Batman Epic Crime Saga” goes well beyond homage and inspiration. It’s not in conversation with prior works - it’s pure plagiarism.

Let’s be real. “The Penguin” is nothing more than a mechanical rip-off of the Sopranos. The performances, the story beats, the sets (particularly the mother’s house) are literally a slavish recreation of David Chase’s work with a slight Batman patina.

What is the point of this entire project?

Why make a Batman movie where the Riddler is nothing…
