    American Murder: Gabby Petito

I saw John Mulaney in Atlanta the night before Gabby Petito’s body was discovered. It was his second show of the night and it started about two hours late because they were checking everyone’s vax cards at the door. I remember being so nervous to be back inside a crowded venue.

It was the show that would eventually become Baby J. It was still called From Scratch at that point. John wore jeans. It was disorienting not to see him…

I’m here for Oz Perkins and his daddy issues. Goddamn. Honestly, this is quite delightful. It’s fucked, but it’s madcap funny, and poignant and emotionally resonant, too. I’d love to see Perkins tackle more of King’s work; I feel like he gets the author’s tone just right, while remaining equally faithful to his own very distinct vision.

    Light from Light

An emotionally resonant character-driven ghost story that is beautifully written, acted and directed. Harrill’s quietly assured filmmaking feels like some kind of minor miracle. I’m in love with this movie and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Seeing it at Central Cinema, Knoxville’s best (and most delicious) movie theater is the best gift one could ask for this holiday season. So damned proud of the creative, passionate, film-loving folks who make my hometown a place worth living in.

    The Blackcoat's Daughter

I can’t think of another movie where demonic possession looks almost indistinguishable from religious ecstasy. Elegant, restrained, unsettling as hell, with an absolute heartbreaker of an ending. Outstanding work from Oz (and Elvis) Perkins, and the three lead actresses are flawless. Love this movie so much.
