If you don’t leave this film burning with indignation, you’re not human. It documents the daily indignities and injustices of being born Palestinian in the West Bank, from home demolitions to confiscations of generators and more. The film is unrelenting and even turns its eye on the filmmakers themselves: Yuval can move about freely while Basel is forced to stay. Yuval is impatient and hungry for change; Basel knows it’s a long struggle whose resolution he may not even live to see. An incredible documentary.

“Smile”—Torres’ character’s insistence on her family smiling for a portrait after her husband was disappeared underscores the brutality of the dictatorship’s actions. These were whole people with full lives, upended by a vengeful military junta. A harrowing but ultimately inspiring film about refusing to be bowed by injustice.

Second half lost a bit of control over pacing but nonetheless, was deeply engrossing. Adrien Brody’s performance, the cinematography, the score were all marvels. The political (aka communist) aspect of Brutalism was noticeably missing but an interesting engagement w the movement’s ideas.
