I found myself bawling in the theater at a few points, particularly during the scene at the concentration camp and the scene where Benji plays the piano, as well as “I’m gonna be okay.” The performances from top to bottom are absolutely fantastic and the script really captures the lived experience Eisenberg must have had. While a captivating watch during, it is ultimately disappointing as it bites off more than it can chew. Often times I found myself questioning what the motivation behind each character was, and it’s unclear in execution whether there’s an answer at all. Essentially felt more like it was trying to impress the audience with its plot twists than give them depth and reason.
It has no right to be this good. It really doesn’t. The leads are beyond fantastic singing and acting. Jeff Goldblum wasn’t a distraction. It earned all 2 hours 45 minutes with still more story to tell, when I went in expecting the “part 1” to be nothing more than a cash grab.
