    Novocaine

    ★★★

The premise of Novocaine is fun: what if you don't feel pain? What follows is a cartoonish, surprisingly violent, film, as Jack Quaid's Nathan tries to rescue the girl of his dreams.

There's a little bit in the trailer that doesn't seem to have made the final edit, where his friend warns him that he's not indestructible. Unfortunately movie physics pushes that way beyond credibility.

It doesn't quite make the most of its central idea. Yet approach it like Quaid is playing a Looney Tune and there's enjoyment to be had.

  • A Working Man

    A Working Man

    ★★½

Jason Statham continues to rehabilitate the one-man army action film, perfected in the eighties. This time he's taking on Russian gangsters in a tale of drug dealing and human trafficking to order.

The Stath plays Levon Cade, a former Royal Marine turned construction foreman. When his boss's daughter vanishes, he reluctantly - OK, not that reluctantly - brings the pain to the assorted bad guys and gals. It's preposterous, and quite a bit samey. Last year's The Beekeeper was more…

    Late Night with the Devil

    ★★★★½

The very start of Late Night With The Devil shows so many production company logos - a reflection of how hard it can be to make a film - that it became annoying, then hilarious. Your patience will be rewarded.

David Dastmalchian stars as Jack Delroy, host of a late night chat show, Night Owls. Jack is not quite as successful as he'd wish to be. A fun scene-setting montage, narrated by Michael Ironside, depicts him as always being second…

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl

    ★★★★½

You know exactly what to expect from a Wallace and Gromit film, and Vengeance Most Fowl delivers in spades.

The conceit of Feathers McGraw coming back is well-executed - he's properly out for revenge - and doesn't feel like Aardman came up with it as a last resort.

A couple of gags are retreads of ones from earlier films, but many more had me chortling.

The best character, as always, is Gromit, with the similarly wordless penguin close behind. Norbot…
