I like that they patch up the obvious swerve around an interracial romance with paul newman by making Diahann Carrol's character just immediately reject his energy. Maybe it's an unpopular opinion but I honestly think it ages the film way better than what an attempt at the alternative would've looked like, plus sidney poitier and Diahann play opposite each other soooo well.
Duke Ellington's score is fantastic for this film, every moment with louis armstrong was the best.

It seems a shame that film can do nothing wrong per se, and yet feel so rote. Sometimes I felt treated by this film for its commitment to grand visuals, I can't imagine how much had to be spent to make certain scenes work. I hated this film with such fervour that it reduced me to my old spiteful and bitter ways. I am sure now that the greatest evil in this life is superficially overread men who make navel gazing films that the rest of the world will benefit by calling pretentious even when, at heart, completely vapid.
