I used to think this was a classic but on second viewing the quirky Minnesota-isms just really undercut the impact of the murder plot. Rather than being an effective juxtaposition of the quaint world of McDormand's small-town cop with the brutality of the crime I felt that the former really jarred with the latter. Daisies 1966
This film’s greatest strengths definitely lie in its visuals. There are no shortage of creative editing and cinematography choices. In particular, I loved the kaleidoscopic transitional shots that occur throughout the runtime.
I just wish things actually happened in the film. Or rather, that things happened in a way that felt purposeful and part of some kind of satisfying narrative arc. A lot of the film just felt like a loosely connected sequence of images, even if many of them were undeniable aesthetically compelling.
