  each of the stars is earned for eggers excellent atmospheric composition and mood making....but who cares? amidst beautiful costuming, design, score, and photography is a numb, empty plot with confused performances. dafoe reprises his poor things british persona, which was a delight. but in all honesty, this could have been much scarier if any sense of danger or true, morality-shaking fear was introduced.
