Godzilla vs. Biollante 1989
There’s a scene where Godzilla is raiding through Osaka, filmed just underneath him, that is one of the best visuals in the series.
This is also the best film of the Heisei era. We get the destruction and Kaiju battles we crave, but they feel more languid and stripped down, probably as close to realistic as these got. It also has the best human story from this era, and it’s nice to see a return to some mystical and spiritual themes in the series.

The Brood 1979
Though Shivers and Rabid are both great, this is Cronenberg’s first masterpiece. A dark, warts and all look at his own divorce and custody battle, as well as the consequences that lead to it. With some additional jabs at self help gurus (it’s obvious that psychoplasmics is modeled after Scientology) and possibly the scariest mutant kids in film history.

Slaughterhouse 1987
Pretty dumb but entertaining late 80's slasher that makes up for what it (mostly) lacks in successful humor with some effective direction and cinematography (I was left wishing the director had done more after this) and performances that are shockingly not bad. As for the kills? They aren't as great as you'd hope from a movie with a guy that has a huge meat cleaver, but it's still gory enough.
Also, love the scene where Lester drives the cop car around. Never before has an actor playing a slasher villain had such an infectious sense of joy doing something so goofy.

Some Texas Chainsaw Massacre references, and then…a nod to Eaten Alive? You are speaking my language.
A24 horror, but not as usual. Sure, there’s a slow burn and artful cinematography, but here Ti West (making a welcome return to horror movies) just wants you to enjoy yourself. No tortured “it’s about trauma” or metaphors-just gory death scenes, unapologetic sex and nudity and welcome humor to go with the atmosphere. More than anything, it’s a rare 70s/80s horror homage done right, as…
