An incredible documentary about art and family. The movie isn’t called “Robert Crumb” because his siblings, his wife, and his kids are also a huge part of what makes this a great movie. His brother Charles Crumb left the biggest impression on me when I first saw this. And again tonight. His is a story about talent and wit never finding luck and validation, and having mental health obstacles to those things. I first saw this when I was in college in Boston. I remembered seeing this, then walking around town, seeing everyone out and about, and thinking of the street drawing sequence from this.

A menacing, potboiler of a western drama. The bullshit of machismo seen through the eyes of a woman, director Jane Campion. I got real MAGA vibes with the Benedict Cumberbatch character being in 1925 thinking “real men” were in the early 1800s. But the one-note feeling to that character, and performance, held this one back a bit. The menace does ramp up in the third act in a low key, quiet way I appreciated. Incredible score from Radiohead lead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, particularly all that haunting, dissonant piano. The first Campion movie I’ve seen. Won’t be the last.
