The variance in quality of the VFX is unbelievable.

By chance, today is Jean Simmons’s birthday and I think it’s nice she got to dart off to Cuba, get hammered, and start a brawl.

Godzilla Minus One popped onto Netflix this weekend and my goodness is this a great film about guilt and trauma. It’s about taking decisive action. It’s about a country at its lowest point sinking somehow lower. It’s Minus One.

I found The Return of Tachibana sequence immensely pleasurable.

There are two points I want to elevate here:

    1) Amazing use of Godzilla as an indictment of rigid and ineffective bureaucracy.
    2) This movie’s VFX blows the median Hollywood movie’s VFX out of the water, and it does so on a very modest budget.

Amazing execution of an awesome premise. Of course, it’s silly at times but the silliness is played for laughs and the whole thing is elevated by Linklater’s direction of the tense moments.

Glen Powell turns in a dynamic performance and shows off his incredible range. He’s in the middle of a great movie run and I think this is his best work yet. He has rediscovered this key insight of “old Hollywood” that you should just put hot people on screen together and let them cook.
