Yet another case of a Best Picture winner that would have a much better reputation had it not won the award. Clever and charming, are revisionist class movies a thing the same way revisionist westerns are? I can't think of an earlier example of a movie where the English nobility isn't only a bunch of idiots and hypocrites but also violently depraved in a very sticky manner. A Lion In Winter, The Ruling Class, Barry Lyndon, and Amadeus all, even those that weren't directly influenced by Tom Jones, followed in its wake.
Sure it loses the plot halfway through but don't we all?
