I like action, exploitation, all manner of genre films and well-made trash.

Psychomania 1973
Fantastic score, great atmosphere, attractive cast, impeccable vibes of England in the ‘70s — tonnes of bloodless fun.

Death Ship 1980
A perfectly fine 2.5 star movie that bumps up one full star for a much more fun third act that really leans into b-horror absurdity, some neat and gross practical effects, and George Kennedy — always a treat — coming down with a full-bore case of boat madness. Wish it had more Saul Rubinek.

Independence Day 1996
“Jasmine really has a thing for dolphins.”
Top to bottom, a flawless blend of script, casting, effects, editing, etc. — all the tropes of 1950s flying saucer drive-in fare, mixed with the epic disaster ensembles of the ‘60s and ‘70s, updated in a pitch-perfect ‘90s time capsule.
Rewatching in 2024, it’s both striking and depressing that this movie starts with the president of the United States getting slammed in the press over public perceptions of his age (for being too young). Also, it’s wild that they let Harry Connick Jr. do The Voice.

Flesh + Blood 1985
What a wild, dark, fucked-up High Renaissance period piece. Classic Verhoeven in its attitudes toward sex and violence depicted in ways both explicit and casual. Some great ‘80s casting and memorable performances that kept my interest as the story smoldered into a mythic, apocalyptic finale. I loved it.
Reminded me very much of Neal Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle trilogy, imagining the historic past as a place almost totally alien to modern sensibilities and populated largely by violent religious psychopaths and hapless, suffering victims — sometimes alternating in the same character according to circumstance.
