The Color Purple 1985
The first 30 minutes are a really hard watch, but the Spielberg emotional buildup to the end hits. Not sure we needed to see the inciting tradgedy in such gruesome detail to get there, but I guess the book's author gave final approval to the script and Spielberg, so she must have wanted it in for some reason.

You look at the way these movies have changed since the first one came out in 2008 - which was a really patient and even had poignant themes kids could latch onto - to this one where the pacing is lightning fast and everything is said out loud; it really shows how much the makers of kids' movies think they need to do just to please our shortening attention spans.

So much of this movie I was not expecting, which is great because serial killer stories have been a little over-exposed for the past true crime boom years. But the fact that Nic Cage, man of every moment, is playing the titular character means you know he is acting. I love what he does in many movies, but maybe he was a little too Cage-y in this movie. Still enjoyed seeing him, and in a way he made some of the more paranormal bits feel a little more grounded, weirdly.
