not my favorite unfortunately
from what i can tell it skips like 3/4 of the book which makes it feel more like it’s supposed to intentionally be a biblical allegory, and fails to do so
overall the cinematography is good for the 50s and the cast did well with what they were given

this is so well crafted. its perfectly gothic. the instrumentalisation and use of strings. you can always count on eggers for religious commentary, analyzing family systems, and incredible landscaping. the camera work is insane and so purposeful. even just the shots play so well with power dynamics and empathy. the role of thomas and his love for ellen, his devotion to her and the way he overlooks the darkness surrounding her is so unexpected and pure. also…
