Juliette of The Herbs 1998
Loved this film. It has stayed with me since viewing. Juliette is such a character - so magnetic and intelligent. The exploration of her life’s work as a herbalist was equally as fascinating as the woman as a character study. A sense of nostalgia as well for a gypsy’s way of a life.

A gently moving story, the internal conflict of Anna is drawn out over the course of a summer holiday with a friend’s family in Italy. We don’t learn much about Anna and we don’t really need to - the film more an exercise in simmering emotional turmoil, desire, the gaps and silences where we place our fantasies. The scenes where dialogue is avoided or obscured and space is given to time passing in company are particularly effective. A daydream of a woman on a precipice.
