  Just brilliant.

  While Part II requires this film to feel complete, the relationship is not reciporcal. Part III can be watched alone since the conceit of the film is essentially the same as Part I, Marty is stranded in the past and needs to get back to the present.

  All the plot structures that tie this film to the first two are explained and dealt with by the end of the opening scenes and the leftover drama from Part II…

  While Back to the Future can easily be watched and appreciated in isolation, Part II suffers because of its plot links to the previous film as well as link-forward to its sequel. It doesn't quite stand alone, but is not able to pull off an "Empire Strikes Back", and the cliffhanger ending is perhaps a bit too dramatic for the film to feel like a satisfying arc.

  Aside from the ending, too much of the plot drama within the film…

  The way this film blends memory and fiction creates some of the most heartachingly beautiful and heartwarmingly tender scenes I've seen in any animated feature. In retelling her life through the films she has acted in, Kiyoko takes both the audience and her interviewers on a tour through scenes which are so well crafted, you'd happily sit and watch the rest of the movie they have been lifted from.…
