Black Bag 2025
Folks, this is a great couples date night movie, go see it. Soderbergh and Koepp do not waste any time in delivering a taut, sexy marital spy thriller. And the cast is uniformly excellent. Just everybody in front of and behind the camera so good at what they're doing and is absolutely cooking. Very much in the vein of Soderbergh's Out of Sight and Ocean's Eleven, scenes bathed in warm light with a big fuzzy bloom on the highlights, propulsive spy movie jazz setting the tone and tempo. Also a very London movie--which is as a former Londoner a big plus for me.

A deeply strange, uncanny, and mysterious film, and this kind of thing is very much my jam. I love a horror film that leans on stylish vibes and doesn't feel the need to overexplain everything--like a real nightmare, the lack of explanation makes it that much more unsettling. But instead of the phantasmagorical Technicolor nightmare of Argento's version, Guadagnino gives us something much more stark and brutalist. Second time seeing it, now in the lovely Steve Jobs Theater with excellent sound. And yeah. Funny, beautiful, clever, moving--great. I'm biased because I busted my ass on it, but judging from the laughs and the sniffing and wiping of eyes from the people who hadn't seen any of it yet, it's a big winner.
