Imitation of Life 1959
kind of conflicted about this one.
it feels well intentioned but still falls short…there’s sooo much that resonated with me but it’s hard to move past the blind spots/stereotypes baked into in the source material. BUT despite the short comings i can imagine this still pushed serious boundaries at the time, especially with how it was able to reach mainstream audiences. so idk i don’t think it succeeds in doing everything it aims to but in the context of its time it’s still doing a lot.
sirk is incredible and MAHALIA JACKSON blew me awayyyyyyyyyy!

The Light of the Moon 2017
A tasteful and honest inside look at the life of a surviver of sexual assault. This is a really important film that treats the subject with respect and creates a narrative that holds the viewers attention without diminishing or glamorizing the survivors experience. Stephanie Beatriz does an amazing job and I can’t wait to see her in more films. It’s sad to see that this film has gone under the radar but I hope more people will give it a chance.
