I decided to make the conclusion to Kobayashi's sprawling anti-war my 4,000th in virtue of it being the highest-rated LB film I'd yet to see. I watched the first film years ago, and I've been putting the sequels off because of their combined mammoth length, but it was so pleasant to see how engrossing these films are. This is the type of shit that film school teaches you how to write, and they don't even make these movies anymore. It's a somewhat entertaining descent further and further into goo goo ga ga movie logic, but it's not the worst thing I've ever seen. Weirdly prescient as a movie about surveillance capitalism and e-sports.
Watch the first scene then switch to something else. The beginning number makes you feel like you're about to watch the most sublime combination of VistaVision and 50s set design ever made. Then the rest of the movie just kinda happens. My 2,000th Film!!!
I feel dumb for putting this film off so long because I found myself impressed by every scene. The writing and sound editing feel so organic. I feel as if I know these people even without showing me a great amount of exposition or direct characterization. The archetypes feel universal. These characters are a part of my family, and perhaps every family.
