My 4,000th Film
I decided to make the conclusion to Kobayashi's sprawling anti-war my 4,000th in virtue of it being the highest-rated LB film I'd yet to see. I watched the first film years ago, and I've been putting the sequels off because of their combined mammoth length, but it was so pleasant to see how engrossing these films are. This is one of the weaker Hawks screwballs, but it has enough forward momentum from Barbara Stanwyck to keep it watchable. Interesting to see Gary Cooper without a cowboy hat.
Shah Rukh Khan is at his most adorable here despite being a lying dweeb. It has the carefree attitude that makes 90s SRK flicks so fun. Sometimes all you need is a dolly push-in and an industrial fan.
My 2,000th Film!!!
I feel dumb for putting this film off so long because I found myself impressed by every scene. The writing and sound editing feel so organic. I feel as if I know these people even without showing me a great amount of exposition or direct characterization. The archetypes feel universal. These characters are a part of my family, and perhaps every family.
The film has the density and the visual brilliance that it feels like a movie…
