Oaths of doctors and thieves. Great movie. The reek of a ruinous 1948 Japan is supplanted for me by the effectiveness a remake of this would still have (true for every Kurosawa but his noirs especially) and a superiority over, ummm, basically anything to come out in the past year or so. You don’t really know what screen presence is until you see Mifune in this. Obviously the most complimented actor of any in his entire cinematic culture, but I don’t think enough can ever be said.
