Red River 1948
Birth of the "boyish man". A little predictable, but balanced out by its leanness. I’m an ardent enjoyer of the Eastwood/Hawks/Lang camera method, the rigid quality they share. Bogdanovich mentions Wayne's "innate likeability" as an actor & in this film despite basically playing a murderous slave-driver; a sentiment I believe remains relevant. How much racism, sexism, and general bigotry can a character get away with if they're charismatic in the big '25? What will an audience ignore? I think: Quite a bit

The explicitly duplicitous marketing for this film is interesting because they’ve taken what has become an easily transparent strategy - immersive ARG, claims of “ultimate terror never before seen!” - and masked it behind arthouse aesthetic to try and cosplay as something innovative or intellectual. Slowly becoming a formative picture for me. Watched the commentary with Hopper & Wenders, who are very chill about making the coolest movie ever - I mean that as a superlative & regular adjective - but I think that's because most of the credit should go to Müller and they both know it.
