The Virgin Suicides 1999
in this movie girls are caged animals, shadows, shells of things for boys to watch, invent, appropriate. it's a film about the male gaze that isn't brave enough or smart enough to be properly horrified by it. instead the invasion and robbing of girls' personhood becomes a romance, and the movie refuses to look beyond the paper dolls its boys want to see. even their suicides are objectifying.
