  Incredibly beautiful film. It’s everything you want to see in a WWII film in Sweden. Beautiful nature of the countryside and incredible shots of Stockholm, fashion, music, politics, etc. 

  It ended pretty shitty though and made me forget about all the beautiful parts at the beginning. Left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth.

  No but this is incredible? It looked so stale but luckily it was a women's movie, it's a bit broad sometimes and the last half hour is so depressing but it's Lavish and I loved Annika and Berit's life together <3

  The movie did captivate me for about an hour with Annika and her family at the farm in Värmland near the Norwegian border, but after Annika moves to Stockholm it starts to drag... and drag. Nothing really happens to justify 3 hour running time. It's a shame because the acting are pretty decent and with the material at hand you could tell a compressed and eventful story with everything that went on in Sweden during WW2. The most enjoyable scenes are at Annika's place of work, restaurant Gillet with Anders Lönnbro and Claes Månsson as chefs.

  A super restoration of Sweden's most expensive movie at that time depicting life as a neutral country from the beginning to the end of WW2. The characters are interesting and although the running time of 3 hours is long, 1939 maintains it's nice pacing with a good performance from Helene Egelund. The period is captured very well.

  Skapandet av filmen 1939 i slutet på 80-talet föregicks av en procedur där svenska folket fick berätta historier om vardagen i Sverige.
  Alltså historier som hade upplevds i skuggan av andra världskriget. Bidragen fick man in genom att i media utlysa en tävling, detta flera år innan filmens tillkommande.

  Manuset skapades sen med detta insamlade material som bakgrund av Brasse Brännström och Bergendahl. Resultatet blev ju verkligen succé.

  Förutom ett bra manus ger de detaljrika miljöerna och stämningen i ljud och bild en imponerande trovärdighet.

  Sprawling and interesting film about life in neutral Sweden during WWII, as Germany attacks and occupies neighboring countries. We follow a young woman from a small farm on the border with Norway through the war as she eventually moves to Stockholm to make a living.

  The film is a little too all-encompassing in trying to capture every facet of the Swedish war experience. A narrower scope or focus could have helped. Some of the characters, particularly the villains, are also cartoons and bring down the film in places.

  On the whole, it is a lavish production with a great period feel in locations and costumes.
