  All things considered this isn't that bad for a made for tv action movie with a dash of fantasy set during the first century A.D. about Boudica, but it isn't great either. At the very least I was expecting some kind of language barrier between the Iceni and the Romans and no actors sporting frosted tips but here we are. I also didn't need that framing device at the beginning and end as narrated by Boudica. I will say though that Alex Kingston, Emily Blunt (in her film debut!), and Dominic Cooper did the best they could with what they were given. In the end, their talents just weren't enough to salvage it.

  Frosted tips reach pre-Roman Britain. There's good limited-budget action and Alex Kingston modulates the amount of shouting required of her so that it has something of an effect, but everything else is trying to ride the chariot-wake of Gladiator, and the production just is painfully short of a full doric column. Boudica definitely wasn't the daughter of Spartacus, either, so I'm not sure what this Dutch (?) poster is on about; but I do know Kingston could've carried all the Ra-Ra Britainia of Boudica's legend without Hugo Speer's sword-for-hire come in from the frontier. On top of its modest visuals and epic pretensions, even for television, Boudica commits the sin of being intensely conventional in terms of characterization. Also, let's just take a moment to ask: what's up with time traveling Emily Blunt?

  I'd forgotten why I wanted to watch this until it started - right, Emily Blunt's in this. I think it's her screen debut. She's one of Boudica's two daughters - the gentle-little-lady one, while the other one is more of a hellraiser. Happily, she finds her inner hellraiser and is eventually seen going to battle while wearing war paint.

  Anyway, you've got Alex Kingston in sword-clanging warrior-queen mode and that is a fine thing to have in your movie, televisually of-its-time as it is. I brought exactly zero expectations for the historical accuracy of anything depicted here, and came away from it with exactly zero opinions on the subject. The one thing I did learn is that there's a totally bitchin' Boudica statue in London.

  Aside from the awful framing device, in which River Song (playing Boudica) literally talks to the audience before the movie begins, as well as the very contemporary British English spoken by both Celts and Romans, somehow able to perfectly understand each other - Boudica (also known as Warrior Queen in the US for some silly reason) is a fairly competent retelling of the historical (and now legendary) Queen of the Iceni's uprising against the conquesting Roman Empire.

  A few details are off, sure, but not as many as you would expect, staying mostly faithful to the events, with the exception of Boudica's end. Unfortunately, the low budget means none of the battles can truly seem as tremendous as they would…
