A recital by the sister of a dead friend brings back bad memories for a music instructor (Sung Hyun-ah), herself a former cellist. Haunted by the past, her life begins to unravel - but are strange occurrences the result of building pressures at home on her mental state, the vendetta of a former student, or something altogether more sinister?
Effective gore, likeable victims, a reasonable running time, and a frenetic cutting style that keeps up an effective pace - Cello is technically achieved. I had previously seen Sung Hyun-ah in Kim Ki-Duk's Time, she makes interesting choices, and while I have no intention of revisiting that director's work, I hope to see more of her output. The only place that…
Well I was actually really pleasantly surprised by this! My expectations weren’t very high given the average rating and small reach, but I really enjoyed this. A lot of Takashi Miike’s Audition vibes, except haunted and South Korean. The last five minutes of the film were totally mind-blowing, really kicked it up to four stars for me. This wasn’t particularly artful, but it was a super solid K-horror, somewhere equivalent to USA’s Malignant in terms of production quality, at least for 2005. I highly recommend this to anyone who’s into supernatural horror, slow-burns, and Asian extreme cinema. Go check it out; I’m sure you could pirate it somewhere, me, I got this DVD for $2 USD at a Big Lots in Buffalo. Yeah, Big…
Can we get more killer ghosts with sharply winged eyeliner and the perfect manicure?
Cello, is it me you're looking for?
This movie is fucking hilarious, I love it. Just mad shit happening every five minutes. It's my Black Swan.
The ending makes up for a lacklustre first and second act.
“Mommy don’t cry!”
Basically a more mean spirited approach to Another Me but with a best friend instead of an unborn twin.
The movie almost revels in putting the lead character and her family through the pain. It’s never distasteful but damn is it hard to watch. As sad and depressing as Another Me got, I still was willing to watch it again. This though is more relentless with a third act that feels particularly unforgiving.
This is a decent movie though I do think there are other movies that have done it better.
You spend an hour not knowing what's going on, then everything becomes apparent, you guess the ending and then it pulls the rug out from underneath.
Pretty good twist with some graphic scenes.
“While watching this movie, tip your head to one side and Chellooo, you’ve got a bass.” — Mr. Schneebly 😂😂🤦♂️🤦♂️
This was actually a trip, well worth the twist ending.
All the actors were great, especially Jin Ji-hee, who played the little sister. I’m normally not a fan of tiny kid actors, but I think she did a bang up job. Probably most believable child actor I’ve seen in awhile. And it was her first role ever. 👌👌
I don’t want to say much else without spoiling anything, it’s definitely worth at least one watch. And it’s not too scary IMO.
⭐️⭐️⭐️½🧡
Solid K-horror.
I felt impatient with this Korean horror film at times but I still kept watching because it was just different enough and strange enough to suck me in. There are some creepy moments that had me wondering why I was watching this at 2:30 a.m and it is filled with quiet dread that creeps towards you like a dying mewing cat. This is the kind of thing that tends to invade my dreams. Maybe time to make a sandwich instead of going to sleep.
The film poses an interesting question that is never answered - how much of what is taking place is real or is it the delusions of insanity and guilt. Even at the end you can't be…
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Inside Llewyn Davis for Korean horror/cello enthusiasts, your honor.
A totally serviceable K-Horror that tries to spin one too many creepy plates. There's the supernatural element, the mute older daughter, the suicidal maid with the tragic past, the vengeful ex-student, claw-like scars, a sad LP. Most of it's misdirection as the conclusion throws in a hum-dinger of a reveal.
This one really is less about the journey, which may not be as satisfying but was worth 90 minutes of my time at least. Oh, and the kid playing the younger daughter should've won all the awards for cuteness. Honestly, hers was the only character in the whole thing that didn't act out-of-sorts, hysterically or stupidly.
