a spiritual addition to the 10/31 franchise in many ways with the extremely low-budget horror anthology style, even featuring many of the same directors returning for this, but included a few segments i actually liked, especially the chupacabra death-game one. sure, it’s filled with bad acting and the low-budget often shines through in moments, but there’s also some genuinely impressive special effects and the theme of the stories focusing on cryptids was my kind thing. these indie-horror posters are always insanely cool, and normally the best part about the films.
A radio show takes calls from listeners who tell them stories of encounters with various creatures. Joe Bob Briggs is the radio host. As with all horror anthologies some stories are better than others(Infectious and Trick or Beast being the best imho). Overall Cryptids is another forgettable horror anthology.
This horror anthology putting a focus on different cryptids and the stories behind them as told by callers to a radio show.
Outside of the wraparound The Truth Serum, we got The Melonheads, The Forest Bride, Frog Me Forever, A Hopkinsville Encounter, Chupacabra Death Machines, Infectious, and Trick or Beast.
All of them varied in effects and story quality. The overall movie felt like an anthology of urban legends and campfire stories, which wasn’t a bad thing at all. The movie was a good watch for the camera work, effects, and cryptids shown. As Joe Bob would say “check it out”.
modern movie march
I've always loved cryptids of any kind (ofc I have my favourites) so I was excited to see an anthology horror with cryptid tales but unfortunately it was flat and boring, somehow feeling much longer than its runtime. This felt Nightvale-ish and I wanted to enjoy it!
Mainly ass, even for a low budget anthology where I wasn't expecting much. The segment about the Dale Gribble clone fucking a fish monster is sort of funny. A segment about a prank gone wrong is decent and has the best looking monster and gore effects. The segment about shithead kids assaulting a cute alien is easily the best of the bunch, by a mile. There's a segment that had an interesting premise about Mexican cartels using chupacabra as weapons, but it's super moronic in execution and it looks like the budget came from Spirit store gift cards. The other segments, I pretty much already forgot. Bigfoot rape, or something. There's a weird amount of monster fucking in this. Also, as much as it pains me to say this, I think we've reached peak Joe Bob Briggs. Maybe don't say yes to everything, my man.
Your typical retrowave horror movie. Joe Bob Briggs plays a radio talk show personality, which is the job to have in a retro horror movie, and we’re treated to a number of stories directed by different filmmakers about cryptids. Some of these are good, some are stupid, and most of them are very bloody. Justin Seaman of The Barn fame directs the last segment, which has some really gnarly effects work. Overall though, it’s nothing too special. If you know this niche of horror movie, you know exactly what you’re getting into and you’ll probably be satisfied.

Decent anthology of tales about local legends and monsters. Nothing really stands out other than Joe Bob playing the radio host. The framing device is the callers to the show are telling local tales and myths. Creature effects were pretty good but the acting and writing were not great. Nothing too crazy but worth the watch just for the originality and theme alone.
Joe Bob Briggs runs a late night show that takes calls from listeners that have encountered unknown creatures in this anthology featuring six segments and a wraparound. Sadly, Cryptids fails to live up to the premise with an incredibly ugly look to the entire movie, poor acting, very lame sense of humour, and unfocused writing. The small glimpses of the sometimes cool looking monsters and practical effects doesn't make any sense considering the work that probably went into them. Brett DeJager's "Hopkinsville Goblins" is probably the best of the stories while most of the others are equally mediocre. The segments too often aim to be over the top goofy and stupid to the detriment of everything else. Briggs is serviceable…
The Melonheads - the irony in having a self-professed cinematographer directing the ugliest short of the bunch. 1/2 star.
Bigfoot - I can’t believe someone ripped off the interspecies rape element from Suburban Sasquatch. 1 star.
The Loveland Frogman - looks like bloody Sorcerer compared to the rest of these and I’m not even joking. 1 1/2 stars.
Hopkinsville Goblins - In Your Head / Without Your Head podcasts host Neal Jones of all people provides a little voice work, and I couldn’t believe it. Oh, and Allison Berg stripped down to her undies. for. this. movie. 1 star.
Chupacabra Death Machines - what an incredible premise and it’s a shame it couldn’t have been given some better looking…well….everything. 1…
This was an absolute blast of an indie horror anthology. The awesome people behind other amazing indie flicks like The Barn and 10/31 bring us a fun filled horror movie with all sorts of monster mayhem. I enjoyed every story in this. Love the variety of creatures. Love that @joebobbriggsofficial plays the radio host and has a central role. Love seeing cameos from my dudes @bendietels and @drewmarvick among others. We get lots of blood and gore and the effects are solid! Production quality is outstanding. We get another excellent score from @rocky_gray and Matt Cannon and so much more fun. Loved the werewolf creature in the final story. This movie was a blast and I highly recommend checking it out when it releases and support awesome indie horror! @zanehershberger @bloodybill @sabeedle @chadbruns @se_marie @screamteamreleasing and every one involved did awesome!!
I've never seen an anthology based around cryptids before, do any others exist? Great idea, but next time give me the frogman wizard variant. Can't believe I got the Dover Demon. This is a really fun group watch. Joe Bob says Check it Out!
I watched this strictly because
Joe Bob Briggs is in it.
This felt like a looser and lighter version of VHS
I’ll allow it
