This was a fun little cop/gangster film, and it's honestly kind of a blast to watch. Plus there are some pretty innovative techniques used in the first ten minutes alone. Where a problem lies is the second half, where scenes become such shorter, and the whole film turns into what feels like a slideshow rather than a movie. It turns into: shootout here, someone gets interrogated, shootout here, someone gets interrogated, shootout here, someone dies, someone gets interrogated, shoutout here, etc. etc. And it's like that until the film just kinda ends.

As I whittle down what I have on the DVR, it was time to see something recorded off of TCM a little more than a month ago. It is “Vintage Blair Russell” for me in this case: a movie I've known of for a long while yet put off actually experiencing myself. Como en la pantalla grande de aquella época se mostraban películas sobre gángsters viviendo la vida de lujos, y la policía retratada como unos completos ineptos, es que nace esta película para reivindicar a la fuerza del poder, y vaya que lo consigue. No creo que envejezca nunca, tiene los ingredientes indicados para no hacerlo. Una trama sencilla junto a un guion, dirección y fotografía terriblemente buenos. A la par están las actuaciones por parte de todo el elenco, con papeles tan desarrollados es que da gusto interpretarlos. El plus extra es James Cagney, su sola presencia es señal de éxito, pues el hombre desborda un carisma impresionante. Los momentazos de comedia que si dan risa a pesar de sus añacos, en una película de un todavía cine-negro formándose. Además la película controla bien su duración y no se alarga innecesariamente. Aparte la portada mola.

James Cagney is "Brick" Davis, from the slums, and knows gangsters, but is just a poor straight lawyer. His friend in the FBI is killed and he joins up and ends up going after this gang of people he knows. They go on a bank robbing spree and kill several people. Lots and lots of shooting. Reminded me of Scarface (1932) in that way. By having the story from the good guys perspective they were allowed to get away with more than they could with another gangster picture now that the Code was in effect. A pretty exciting show with Barton MacLane, Robert Armstrong, Ann Dvorak, and Lloyd Nolan.
If James Cagney is in a movie, I will watch it. That's the deal. I love the guy. He's a live wire and one of the most charismatic people to ever grace the silver screen. Just watching him brings me joy, whether he's dancing or blowing people away or, hell, just sitting around talking. It doesn't matter what Cagney does, he simply commands my full attention whenever he does it and absolutely delights me.

Whats this?! James Cagney on the wrong side of the law?! For him any way. Cagney the FBI agent! It's in gangster films he's at his ace, and this is a Hays code compromise. You still get all the exciting gangster scenes with violent shootings and high body count, but since the hero is on the side of the law the violence is justified by the eyes of the production code.

Well-made Warner Bros. picture with James Cagney as a streetwise FBI agent going after the gangsters he grew up with. Much of the plot sees Cagney having to prove he's a sincere lawman not a gangster baddie in disguise. That spells an interesting post-Code document, with Warner's working overtime to flip and reform Cagney's star persona to suit that other newly empowered law enforcer, Joseph Breen. Same genre, same star, just a new moral compass. "There's no rule that says a G-Man can't kiss an old friend goodbye, is there?" The action is most exciting, the screenplay is crisp, and Barton Maclane cuts a memorably desperate figure. And there's tender Ann Dvorak as a gangster's moll, perceiving her own entrapment in the mirror reflection of right-side-of-tracks doppelgänger Margaret Lindsay. A near great film, just held back by the icky Cagney-Lindsay plot line, an ostensible love story that's more like harassment.
