Charlie Plummer and Kelvin Harrison Jr. are two of the best young actors working right now so their involvement alone got me curious about this. After seeing how stacked the rest of the cast was and how potentially powerful this material could be I got pretty optimistic for this but sadly "Gully" is one of the worst movies I've seen in a while. It's a complete mess and I have absolutely zero clue what it was trying to say or do. It virtually has no plot and it's completely misguided from start to finish. It's mean spirited, unpleasant and features hardly any likable or developed characters. Charlie Plummer and Jacob Latimore are both really good here but the rest of…
Y’all trippin. Not nearly as bad as half the shit people on this app typically enjoy. This was aight!
Nabil Elderkin is a legendary music video director. He’s directed a few of my favorite music videos like Pyramids by Frank Ocean and James Blake’s Overgrown. Nabil always has an eye on visual/musical storytelling. So to transition from music videos to feature filmmaking should be simple as long as the story is good. Unfortunately, Nabil’s transition to feature filmmaking was not that simple.
Gully is a amalgamation of 90s hood films like Boys In Da Hood and Belly (also directed by a music video director Hype Williams). The tropes of 3 kids who live in the hood and have violent tendencies is all there. It’s completely tiring and wasteful at this point in 2021. We are beyond the black struggle…
Three teens will get up and go,
Disrupting the whole status quo.
Like Grand Theft Auto,
They drive around blotto,
See ultra-violence as real "horrorshow".
Y'all hate this movie for no reason. I'm supposed to believe this is a bottom 100 worst movie of all time but y'all somehow find merit in a bunch of other junk that's 100x worse. Hood films with some surface commentary on shit gets 4 stars but a low budget film about the effects of living in the hood on residents mental health is somehow a horrible film.
I promise you the hood is not some fantasy land heightened for entertainment. It's just as disjointed and inconsistent as a film like this displays. I ain't gonna buy this on DVD or anything but the reviews are weirdly critical of an OK movie. It's not offensive enough for all these half stars.

I am at a complete loss for words right now. The major disconnect between my thoughts on this film and everyone else’s is astonishing. I am blown away by how low the IMDb score is. Currently at a 1.2. I do get it. The movie, at times, can make a no sense. There are some things that are a little poorly communicated. But I really enjoy this film setting. I like all the actors in it, except for Amber Heard bitch ass. Mostly, I admire how ballsy this film is. It does some crazy stuff that filmmakers would tell you to never do because your audience would get pissed off. But this movie doesn’t care. Not in a…
This movie is right up my alley
Elderkin has worked with some of my favorite artists, so the cameos in this felt perfectly on brand, especially within the world of the film, which felt extremely fleshed out
The three leads are amazing for a variety of reasons, and Kelvin Harrison Jr., who is AMAZING in Luce, steals the show
A deep look into trauma that is bathed in violence, drugs, and alcohol, the film feels extremely stylized in all the right ways, although suffers from some plain direction at times
Still, this film feels like a great step as a debut from a voice that will be sure to be a fresh addition to cinema
Shoutout Travis, shoutout Vince Staples, shoutout Nabil
sully... tully... gully!
ok the issue is the 3 main actors (and i’m shockingly including charlie plummer in this) are the hottest people alive and had some of the best acting i’ve seen all weekend.
HOWEVER delete the clockwork orange shit delete the video game violence delete the apple tv drone shots of LA thank you
it’s like the worst parts of crash had a baby with the mid 2000s era of gritty coming-of-age movies about delinquent teens à la guide to recognizing your saints. story and characters are thinner than a single square of 1-ply toilet paper. and when i thought it couldn’t get any worse, travis scott showed up
“white trash seabiscuit looking motherfucker” was a good insult tho
Charlie Plummer is the least believable guy to play a hoodlum. He looks so clean and shiny and not threatning at all.
That was just a remakr because the film has clearly really good actors who just don't fit within these roles, although I don't think anyone could fit in these roles as the screenplay is so thin and poor in ideas.
A stunning depiction of three troubled teens as they adventure through a fantastical joyride of limitless behaviour. Elderkin combines this with the harsh reality of their underprivileged upbringing to create three lived experiences. He brings forward two opposing ideas: the impoverished state of the oppressed and the longing for freedom within. Juxtaposing these elements paralyzes us as viewers. We neither celebrate nor admonish their recklessness, but are rather paralyzed into a state of non-judgement. Reduced to impartial bystanders, we are forced to watch as nature unfolds itself. The video game-esque sequences adds a meta-like quality to sequences most of us would only see on the consoles themselves. Adding in an impressive performance by the legendary Terrence Howard, Gully transcends itself into an Oscar-contending picture. A high bar has been set for 2019.
