i watched this again after several years of first seeing it. i don't know what this film does to make it feel so emotional but even for this second viewing, it's left me feel very philosophical about life. the odd sweetness yet sorrows layered in the plot made it feel so human. still one of my favourites to this date.
I can't believe this is the same guy who played the brother in "Giri/Haji". Look at him nailing (no, more like perfecting) a completely different role; a very likable and easy to sympathize one, in a matter of fact.
This film could've been better, but it's really worth the shot looking at how great the performances are and heart-warming the story is; which, come to think of it, is really not surprising for a Japanese film especially of this story trope.
sweet! sometimes there are stains that don’t wash away and you have to step into that puddle you were trying to jump across just yesterday and say goodbye to the birds flying out of sight and hold on until you dream the right dream. at the end of a string of uneventful days there’s always change and maybe images are the most impalpable and precious pockets of time and that special lingering light that seemed to seep through everything at the start of the millennium can only be seen but never really captured again.

i've been fucking yourrrr girllll (ive been fucking your girl) didn't know you'd noticeeeee (didn't know you'd noticeeee)
watched because of devon
An offbeat, heartwarming story with touch of sadness... for a dull, mundane title, it has quite something to offer.
Quickie Review
PROS
The cast give fantastic and heartfelt performances (Koyuki displays world-weary sadness with just a glance while Yosuke Kobozuka never overacts the character's handicap and shows innocence, pure heart and honesty beautifully)
The soundtrack and cinematography and direction are all top-notch (the pacing of the film suits it perfectly due to its slice-of-life genre)
The two leads have fantastic chemistry (through their interactions, nothing feels phony or out-of-place)
The subplots add to the film (like Koyuki's subplot with her sister) and the side characters they encounter providing surprising laughs
CONS
Slow pacing may frustrate some
SCORE: 9/10 (A lovely film about loss, friendship and closure. Yosuke Kobozuka and Koyuki give heartfelt performances and Junichi Mori gives the film a fantasy-like feel within the mundane setting, making the film feel a whimsical, yet compelling character study.)
