  Meandering, tropey and often cliche story of an expanded Maori family in the 1950's suffering under the tyrannical animosity which grips its stubborn and temperamental patriarch due to his rivalry with another family. The rivalry, of course, explodes when a Romeo and Juliet-style love affair begins which mirror and triggers the patriach's own past and demons.

  What helps the film rise above its sluggish weight is some stand-out performances (though the entire acting ensemble is a real mixed bag), beautiful art-direction, Ginny Loane's stunning cinematography and the film's almost idyllic and nostalgia-stirring setting of rural New Zealand middle-class life in the 1950's (racism problems not withstanding of course).

  Forgettable in the long run, but genuinely engaging if you're looking for a historical family drama - particularly one that doesn't focus on Europeans for once - set in a uniquely bygone time and world.

  Best Tamahori work in a really long time. Still not at the level of a Once Were Warriors, but this Maori twisted and sheep filled Romeo & Juliet of sorts was pretty enjoyable.
  Extra points for the ending scene that every movie lover will identify with.

  I quite liked this.
  The costuming and set/location/prop design was amazing.
  The cast did really well. Some great, big scenes.
  The dialogue was fine but I feel could've been stronger esp the final dialogue between Tamehana and Simeon.
  I understood some choices but that's bc I'm Māori and my whānau is in some silly ways staunchly patriarchal but in terms of character development they didn't quite make sense to me.
  It felt like a lot happened in this film but also nothing.
  Yea hmm lemme read some reviews n gather my thoughts.

  "If you're a minute late to heaven do you think God will let you in?"

  Compelling and authentic, with good performances, but the story itself almost falls under its own weight. Found it kind of hard to enjoy at times because I was more focused on writing notes for class than being invested in the film and there are some repetitive themes that I've seen before, but, it was still good.

  It’s no Once Were Warriors, but the director-actor duo of Lee Tamahori and Temuera Morrison has undeniable chemistry. While slow in places, the story is gripping and authentic, with strong emotional weight and mostly well fleshed out characters and motives.
