One of my favorite genres is movies about 20 year-olds, produced by 60 year-olds, written by 50 year-olds, starring 30 year-olds, marketed to 15 year-olds.
There's something inescapably charming for me about a made-for-MTV college-set supernatural paranoia horror movie from 2014 that feels like 1999, clearly made by AARP members who haven't interacted with adolescents since their own adolescence. I lowkey admire that it addresses body image issues and mental health, both despite and because of the boneheaded way it whiffs those topics. And I support any movie where the satanists win (spoiler not spoiler).
Cf. Innocence (2014)
A horror movie by MTV. Enough said.
And by that, I mean it's shit.

Something by the same director (Richel Talalay) from Movie #5 (Ghost in the Machine)
It took me a while to find a copy of this movie because it only aired on MTV in the United States and I could not find it anywhere to rent or buy. I had to buy a DVD import from Hong Kong on eBay. I was looking forward to watching the most recent movie from Richel Talalay because I really like Ghost in the Machine (1993) and Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991) is a fun guilty pleasure. Too bad this movie was not very good. The Dorm is a forgettable horror movie in my opinion. This…
A pointless and uninspired mix of (the far superior) The Craft and Mean Girls, The Dorm is that kind of bland, vacuous teen movie that makes you want to give up on modern horror fare all together.
been too long since i’ve seen something with a proper Degrassi actor so here’s The Dorm, starring KaraMel member / Psychocandy member / the mind behind Destructo Doll / Manny Santos herself CASSIE STEELE!
what if The Substance was Mean Girls and also The Craft and it was trashy MTV college horror? maybe that sounds cool, maybe it could have been. but i’ve seen this movie a hundred times! it’s tired, it’s boring. it’s just Killer Bash without the softcore gay porn 😔
bonus points for having ‘Power’ by Cassie on the soundtrack, also for having a ‘You’re just jealous!’ moment. anyway….stream KaraMel’s cancelled album on soundcloud and Psychocandy on spotify😌
thE VOICES TOLD ME DO IT
This could have been great. It had so much potential...
But then it failed.
Teen horror flick that mixes elements of She's all that with The Craft to create a so so film. The film for the most part is a paint by numbers horror so don't expect to be shocked, the twist ending is nice but again not too suprising. Overall a watchable film but you won't remember it a day or so after watching it.
Can't say I'm exactly sure I know why anything that happened here happened. Nor that it matters.
I'm about to go to bed but logging this now to be safe because I'm convinced that, when I wake up, I will have forgotten that I even watched it.
It's not that The Dorm is a BAD film. Like, it tells a story and has production values and the cast all came into work on time and did their jobs but that's about all I can say. It's just soooo generic. A depressed socially awkward girl moves onto a university campus (into the suspiciously named Usher Hall) and suddenly a group of popular kids want to be her friend. Could it be they're in some kind of weird blood cult and using her as a sacrifice? I've seen this…
Trashy college horror, wasn't boring but not great either. Don't drink the suspicious looking tea.
