This one starts off pretty interesting with a low life guy who seems like he’s one crime away from jail or death... he gets glimpses of future events Though and because of that Ability someone wants him to handle a delicate transaction with some diamonds.. from here things feel a little familiar for a while but about halfway thru a pretty cool twist happens.. it all plays out as a gritty noir with a sci-fi element .. some of the acting was borderline ok and some of the story was a little cockamamie to me but overall it’s a nice little low budget mindfuck thriller .. pacing is quite good too I’d never call this boring and it’s got a few good surprises ... nothing as good as something like coherence or memento let’s say but it’s like those and if that’s your jam I’d give this a whirl. If it’s not maybe then pass...
What this lacks in budget it makes up for in sheer ambition, and is clearly influenced by a range of other 'resources maximized' sci fi like Primer, TimeCrimes and to a lesser extent Triangle.
The first half is a couple-on-the-run thriller but once a huge gear change happens there's a cracking yet inevitably messy mindbender to enjoy, complete with some remarkably good performances to keep you focused amid the chaos.
I saw this back at PFF 2019 and imagine if looper, inception and rober Rodriguez had a baby this would be that baby! Unique concept. Keep your eye out for it and go check out the trailer my quote got pulled for it!
Love seeing indie films like this. You can feel the blood sweat and tears all over it. Something where the filmmakers just rolled up their sleeves and made their movie happen.
OK low-budget time-travel thriller that will have you feeling some deja vu of your own if you’ve seen very many (better) movies like PRIMER, TIMECRIMES, LOOPER, etc...
Very very good premise but part of it started to get boring, not sure it may have just been me but at least this was a nice sci-fi dramatic sort of film that it does well sometimes but not all of the time but glad I just got to the end of it.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
In Tony Dean Smith's "Volition",
A character lives with premonition.
As it starts to unravel,
He may time travel,
To stop a visit to the mortician.
On now tv for the next 13 days
Time travel films are always cool
Was enjoyable but I feel like they didn’t really know how to finish the movie and that’s the best ending they could settle on that would tie it together because the time travel definitely doesn’t lineup for that happy ending
I am not a fan.
The Angela character had zero development whatsoever.
This multiple individual time loop was done before and ultimately ended lazily.
The soundscape and sound editing was annoying.
I was hoping to be surprised but everything was pretty much expected and the set ups for future reveal were obvious.
I want my money back.
"Volition is, in a way, a film about its own writing, and the unusual detours that writers can take in pursuit of what they initially conceive as a fixed idea with a prescribed ending. James’ childhood sketchbooks, and the elaborate diagrams that he draws on his wall, are like the post-it notes that writers arrange and rearrange as they plan out the details and interconnections in their screenplay, where revisions are no less important than plot outlines, and where each deviation creates a different, parallel world. As the Smith Brothers work their way through this paradoxical conundrum, the result is Volition itself, an ingenious product as much of optimistic will as of entrapping design, with a miraculous, impossible ending."
More at Projected Figures
In a manner that’s reminiscent of lo-fi sci-fi films like Primer and Coherence, Volition succeeds in showing off its ambition and twisting my brain around. For the first half-hour or so, this keeps things relatively straightforward, though that doesn’t mean it’s at all uninteresting. The plot unfolds with a slow-burn pacing and a gritty mood that keeps me invested, and it helps that there are some good performances (particularly from John Cassini) amping up the quality. Then we veer into a whole new direction, which is when things really get intriguing. I’d gotten spoiled and had a sense for what would happen beforehand, but even then, that didn’t detract from how much the movie was able to enthrall me.
